《Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain》在Gamescom 2015的特別預告，與近期發布的一系列宣傳海報一樣，整體的基調越發黑暗，被鮮血和仇恨沾染的Snake將會面臨怎樣的結局呢？這段預告以沙漠場景開場，一輛直升機飛過，之後的字幕總結如下：“這是一個時代的終結……和平需要付出代價，但有些戰爭永不止歇，直到某人逝去，探索開放世界，以及未知的真相……這並不關乎正義，僅僅是複仇而已。”有趣的是，網絡上也流出了一份《The Phantom Pain》的全章節名單，包括序章與終章共有7章63節，但目前對於各章節內容的了解僅限於章節名而已（劇透警示，完整的章節名單在文末放出）。
值得一提的是，近日日經新聞的一則報導引起了業界的關注，稱《The Phantom Pain》的開發費用耗資超過8000萬美元，而這筆預算可能就是造成小島秀夫和科樂美之間的不和主要原因。
文章寫道科樂美創始人和主席上月景正不再有興趣增加主機遊戲的預算，這是因為主機遊戲投資回報率的不斷下降，特別是在自家手游《Dragon Collection》的成功之後，科樂美高層更加註重手游市場的發展，而《Dragon Collection》這款遊戲開發成本遠低於100萬美元。
但作為一款次世代開放世界大作，凝聚了製作人小島秀夫畢生才華的《The Phantom Pain》達到如此之高的製作費用也並不會讓人感到太驚訝。
